Studio Brief 01 - PUBILC SPACES IN LEEDS
The uses and (sometimes) abused of public spaces do much to communicate the identity and character of cities. Across Leeds there is a huge list of events that take place within its public spaces that range from carnivals, concerts, markets, exhibitions, parades, sports events, protests, happenings, flash mobs, etc.

Your task is to research the various events happenings that have occurred in Leeds and helped shape the city; then choose one that will become the focus for an A3 traditional print that celebrates this event.
You can choose any event whether it was organised or impromptu but it must be celebratory in tone.

Your A3 print must use obit traditional print methods (minimum of two colours/finishes). The prints will be
exhibited in the level 4/5 exhibition in May.

Think visually, explore both literal and lateral responses.

Explore working with text and image, both combined and separately.

Consider age various technique and processes that are available to you and their suitability for conveying or re-enforing the idea that you are trying to communicate.

Deliverables:

Final print (analogue A3 print).

Five A3 design boards that provide a condensed overview of your research, process and design decisions.

Documentation of your development via postings yo your Studio Practice blog.

Studio Brief 02 - PRODUCT RANGE DISTRIBUTION

Examine Graphic Design outputs relating to social, political and ethical change.

Aim to increase your awareness of historical examples plus contemporary practice that is responsive to the 21st Century issues.

Be sure to note the relationship between medium and message.

You should then produce a body of research work that explores the connections between these concepts and their respective design outcomes prior to your own practical and conceptual exploration of possible products, ranges and methods of distribution that may be suggested by your preferred content or, indeed, those that reflect your own ideologies, concerns and/or ambitions.

This brief is in two parts -

Part 1: Based on the introductory workshops, develop a practical, visual and contextual investigation of a specific subject.

You should aim to develop research from a range of primary and secondary sources in order to fully explore the opportunities for informed creative development.

Your research and development of this part of the brief should be documented on apropriate blogs and will be presented as part of your interim concept pitch.

Part 2: Devise and develop a body of practical work that both distils your knowledge of an identified issue and demonstration your ability to tap into the market potential for socially, politically and ethically-driven design.

This output should still work within the broader creative and professional contexts of Graphic design but could be based around ideas of awareness or protest.

Examples of potential deliverables include (but are not limited to):
  • materials relating to an issue-led campaign (this could be one affiliated to an established organisation or a more 'guerilla' approach)
  • a poster series
  • a booklet/publication/manifesto
  • a web/digital platform
  • placards, banners or a set of badges
  • a range of products or merchandise that communicate your identified core message.
Your contextual research, critical observations and reflective evaluations should be documented on your Studio Practice blog and summarised within reflective content that supports your design submission.

Your response should explore the relationship between product range and methods/media of distribution as well as specific audiences, contexts and appropriate tone of voice.

Publication Layout - Leah For the inside of the 'Our Generation' publication, the collaborator Leah was in charge of this  brief's outcome segment. The publication's layout was constructed with 'Adobe Indesign' Leah made guide lines and measurements to help assist where the Photographs and the text should be placed. Illustrations of a paint brush stroke was experimented to give the pages more characteristics. We mutually agreed to make the size of the publication A5 format, and the number of pages are 16. Previously it was going to be 17, however one participant was unable to provided us with their childhood photo for us. Due to this situation Leah had to be more selective with the photos and information (Quotes) that we believe was significant for outlining our briefs context.  Below are some images of this layout format: Participant page order by names: Katie Sung  Leah Chen  Jackie Wan Tracey Lau Eliza Mo Kylie Lee Lewis Capper...

Studio Brief 02 - Licence to Print Money | History of Money & Banknotes Research

Money History The word money comes from the Latin 'Moneta' - which is the first Roman coinage that was minted at the temple of Juno Moneta in 344BC. Before coinage, various objects such as cattle, pig's teeth and shells had been used as money. For most of its history money has taken the form of coins made of precious metal. The money has had intrinsic value. Many of the units of modern money recall their origin in amounts of precious metal (e.g the pound sterling was originally the Roman pound (twelves ounces) of silver.) The Beginning of Banking in Britain In Great Britain, the modern age of banking began in 1640 when King Charles I, needed cash to pay the (English) army that he was raising against Scotland ( of which he was also King.)to seized the golf bullion that many merchants and nobles had placed in the Tower of London for safe-keeping. In 1642, a further warfare broke our with the English Civil War between the King and Parliament. London was the stronghol...

Katie always  communicated very well. We were both impressed with how she incorporated the feedback we gave into her designs, s he always consciously and aware of what we wanted overall, sent many new variations of the logo designs, always referred back to feedback and messaged us for specific information (e.g. Business card enquires) and she was able to explained her designs to us and how it would be much better (i.e. change of the colour scheme).  To conclude the final results were great.  I would highly recommend Kati...
