In conclusion, for my final print I am please with the results even though the print was either uneven or patchy due to the paint drying up or how I poorly aligned. However it does add some effects like showing the screen print process.
I was very undeceive with which event I should design the A3 screen printing poster of, I was particularly undeceive between the two events I that drew illustrations of which were 'Leeds International film festival' and 'Leeds International beer festival'. I was very tied by two designs that I did for both of them as both were good designs. Even when I received feedback from peers they also struggled between the two designs. Despite this problem, most of them said that the international film festival is more popular/well-known event compared to the other. This is why I went with the 'international film festival' as my event that I will focus more on.
When it came to the screen printing part. I had to ask for a lot of help during the process of screen printing, the reasoning of this that I have not done screen printing in quite a long time. Nevertheless, I got the help I needed and my exposed screen had my design on it.
But the only challenging part of screen printing was printing the design onto the paper that I have brought. The reasoning of this was I had difficulties mixing the paint with the emulsion, I was very unsure on how much paint and emulsion was needed to be mixed up together. This is initially the first thought I had when my design did not print properly when transferred to paper. When transferring the painted design onto the paper it would either miss some areas or become patchy/unevenly spread. The only solution to solve this issue was either to add more emulsion or paint.
So I had a lot of trials and errors when printing the colours onto the pieces of papers that I had brought. Nevertheless, even though the patchy colour was uneven it added quite a nice effect of the screen printing process. The colour gold was mostly the particular colour to transfer through the screen, this was because the gold has a lot pigments which I really want it to show up when printed on the paper. After a few times, the colour finally showed up as I wanted it to be and there were less patchy areas when transferring onto the paper.
Once the gold was printed successfully on the paper, I left it on the drying rack so it would dry completely before put the second layer design on. The second colour that would go on top of the gold colour would be the colour black. The colour black was more easy to transfer through the screen, there were only a tiny bit which were patchy. Nonetheless, I did have some trouble when putting the black second layer on the gold printed design. The paper would either move while transferring the black colour onto the paper or either I did not align the existing print properly.
Beside this technicality I was successfully able to print the colour black onto the gold colour nicely. Even though there were a few patchy but it added a nice effect to the poster. Once the black had successfully been printed on, I waited until the colour dried so I could put it away.
As from my previous digital mock up designs on my blogs, the colour designs demonstrated the colours of gold, black and red for one of the designs. I thought I could cut up the remaining white areas on my screen printed posters. I used a craft knife and a mat to cut these areas out. And I used PVA glue to stick them both together, however this did leave the cut out on the red paper to be bumpy and uneven. I also added some gold foil strips onto the background, I used double sticky tape to transfer the gold foil onto the paper.
When it came to submitting the final screen printing poster to the exhibition. I had two final prints one with the white paper background and the other is the red background. Before deciding which one to submit I asked some final feedback on which of the two should submit. Majority of the feedback said the one with the white background, as the one with the red is very uneven and bumpy. Thus the tutor advised me as the posters would be displayed onto the way, it would not be as nice with the bumpiness. Therefore in the end I decide to submit the white background poster, even though the colours overlap and some areas are patchy. I had no more time to reprint another one as I ran out of paint as well, in addition someone took my screen so I had no time to redo the process.
Nevertheless, I am happy with my design and being able to screen print again. I did enjoy this process and may use this in future briefs.
