Studio Brief 01 & 02 | OUGD505 End of Module Evaluation

End of Module Evaluation - OUGD505

To conclude on the OUGD505 module evaluation both studio brief 1 and 2. I found both briefs equally challenging especially when conducting the research aspect. It was very hard for me to find topics which were suitable not only for the brief but also for the design part for the final submission of the modules deliverables.

For studio brief 1 - Public Spaces the aim of the brief was to design a suitable representation of the chosen event. This must be traditionally printed that mean using the process of screen printing. The screen print poster must be in the paper size A3 and the deadline for this was the 5th of May as the poster would be put up in the Level 4/5 exhibition.

When commencing this brief, I had a hard decision on which event I wanted to do a poster for, especially with the event I had researched the following events were: Leeds international  film festival, Leeds international beer festival, Leeds christmas markets and Leeds indie food festival. I sketched out out of three event ideas in my sketchbook to see which one would be the most eyes catching or appropriate that gives a satisfactory representation of the city Leeds and what it has to offer.

I especially had a problematic time between two events which were the film festival or the beer festival. I favoured two specific designs, even when I asked my peers to see which one they would prefer to see on the exhibition there were equally popular. In the end I decided to go with the Leeds international film festival as it is more well known compared to the beer one.

The screen printing process of making the actual poster was also quite difficult as I forgot how to create a screen with my own design on it. Luckily the member of staff in the print workshop was able to guide me on how to do the screen printing process. Once he told me the process and helped me step by step I slowly remembered how to create a screen.

The only struggle I had when screen printing was that the paint colours that I mixed together with the emulsion kept drying up my screen when printing my design on paper. Because of this problem my paint would often have missing gaps or spaces on the paper. To fix this problem every time I wanted to transfer my colours onto the paper I had to use a sponge and lightly wash away the dry paint. This method did work, however sometimes of the wetness of the screen made the paper stick onto the screen. Not only that the paint would also smudge onto the paper making a very damp print on the paper.

In the end the poster turned out well when screen printing repeatedly. I had an idea of adding another colour to the poster's palette. I decide to cut the remaining white areas then sticking the remaining screen print colours onto a A3 coloured paper. Despite this it made the print look bumpy and uneven. So therefore in the submission of the A3 traditional print poster I decide to submit a poster with the white background. Even though some of the colours where over lapped, my tutor said it looks better as you can tell it has been screen printed.

Referring back to studio brief 2 - Product, range and distribution the aim of this brief was to established a political, social, ethical etc issue then find ways on how this issue could then be designed for to spread the importance of it.

Similar to the first brief again I struggled a lot with finding an actual issue which I could design for. It took me a while to find these kind of issues online, I did not want to do a generic issue so thats way I took longer than others. In the end I found an issue, which was the disabilities issue. I either wanted to force on the following topics of this genre: Universal designs, work & employment and Paralympics. When sharing the research and information that I found to peers a lot of them said this kind of issue is quite hard to design for, especially on how specific it is. This was true as I had a hard time on sketching posters ideas, even existing posters did not help to inspire my design for this issue.

Therefore, I changed my issue as it was getting more difficult to design for. The issue that I changed to was the breastfeeding in public issue. This was more easier yet more interesting to design for. Whilst I was researching about this there was many informative, social media and articles based on the topic. Plus there were many inspiring poster designs that help me to design my issue work.

I decide to go with the idea of comparing breast milk to cow's milk as both has their own benefits to the human body. I specifically compared the milks in cartons, each milk carton had a certain colour and name. For the breast milk the carton was pink, the slogan that would make the audience think about their actions was "There are all types of milk... Which one is more natural?".

I made a series of three posters for this issue. Then I also made some stickers which was the pink carton design, this sticker could potentially be distributed in supermarkets especially on any type of dairy product. This will have a huge impact whenever someone would pick up the product as they consume it in their everyday.

Overall, all briefs in the final product turned out well. However, I could do better a similar brief next time. I believe what really slowed me down during these briefs was definitely the collecting the right amount of research and sticking with that topic. I was being very indecisive throughout these two briefs which definitely slowed me down at my creating the final design process. This is what I need to improve on, I was also considering to create a leaflet to go with the breastfeeding final products. Unfortunately I did not have enough time to create this. In advance for future briefs I really need to consider and quickly decide which topic I want to design for.

Objectivity - Subjectivity

Evaluation: Overall, my final evaluation including looking at my peers/year tutors feedback of my logotype. Has shown that I needed to do more research into my colours, as I tried to stick with the original colours of the current logo of Krispy Kreme. As my last critique group told me to stick with them without changing it. Some liked and disliked the outline of the typography as some say it looked like icing, whilst others said it would be better if it were fuller so it makes more of an impact. Most of the comment was about the bad colour choices of the Green as it has connotations of an industrial, chemical and unhealthy look. But some said it could have connotations of high sugar as for a donut. Everyone recognised the doughnut shape for the logo, some saw the neon letter as an American diner look as my critique group told me to stay with the retro look. One of my others peers comment, that the use of the contrast between the Sans Serifs and Serif typography is appropriate to d...

'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' - by Armand Mevis (Notes/Analysis)

During this session, we look into and analysis an essay called 'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' by Armand Mevis.  The whole class did a group discussion, we shared some significant quotes within the essay that relates to our brief Type in Context: ' All these books have to be designed. Someone needs to decide which paper, typography, cover, to use'.  'It may be a jungle; you may find it hard to get the nice job, and you might get lost, but that is part of the adventure'.  Mistakes are inherent to the job of making books through trial and error'.  Over the years we have learned to limit the number of mistake; we are now much more in control'.  'Ideally, all books start with a question. The clearer the question, the more precise the answer'.  'As designers we are as responsible for content as anyone else'. 'Some books arrived in plastic bags like garbage, stac...

Studio Brief 01 - Secret 7: Final Design

In this design board, I have chosen this Record Sleeve design cover to be my final  submission for the live brief - Secret 7. I particular favoured this design as it really  portrayed the artists song and style well as the variety of the different shades of blue tones gave a good theme for the overall concept of the chosen lyric that I selected. “You were the perfect star. Again describing the meaning of the design will be yet again explained here. The symbolism  of the star is similar to a heart of the person who is going through a heart break thus this  is similar feeling when the break bit is being cracked like glass. The glass look makes it  highlight that the person’s heart is very sensitive and weak and the colours of the different  shades/tones of blue express their unhappiness and also how innocent and pure they are. The way the star outline repeats depicts how the person is slowing forgetting the perfect star  which has broken the heart...
