OUGD603 | Extended Practice | Overall Module Evaluation

OUGD602 | Extended Practice - Module Evaluation

In conclusion of the overall module of OUGD603 – Extended Practice. I found this module the most stressful and challenging out of the other two modules. This was due to the timescale of some briefs that longer than expected, collaborations and clients. In addition multi-tasking with various of briefs and trying to stick within the given timescale.

The briefs that were the most time consuming where the Starpack’s student awards ‘Future Milk Bottle’ &  ‘Luxury Tin designs for Tea and Coffee’. The reason for this was that I wanted to create the bottle and tin design out of a 3D printer. However, I underestimated the amount of time I had to get the tin and bottle model accurate and the amount of time/hours for the 3D printer to build out the 3D packaging designs. There were many trials and errors before the prototype was functional and practical to use for the final outcome of the brief. Therefore, for a project similar to packaging design especially when making a physical model I will need to allow plenty of time for the building progress of this to not overtake all my time.

When collaborating either with other peers on the course or an external collaborator I now to be more aware and prepare incase the collaborator is unable to help or lacking within the collaborative work. There have been a few occasions when we spilt the work separately, a week later I ask if they have done their side of the work and sometimes they have not done it or come round to it. This is what has also disrupt my timescale was doing their part of the their work for the collaborative brief. Thus leaving me less time to work on other briefs and possibly completing them. I personally believe in the two collaborations I felt like the one who the collaborators relayed on too much. Due to this we had a few disagreements and tensions. However, in the last minute they completed their part within the project and we were able to produce a satisfactory outcome.

During the first time of working on live briefs with actual clients was at times stressful. The main reason was that some do not respond quickly back to design feedback or simply forget to provide feedback. There have been occasions that I would have to push and message them for some feedback on logo designs. Nevertheless, the outcome of the live briefs was achievable and the client was pleased with the final design. The situation of finding a placement was also difficult and added on my stress. It unfortunately, it took more time than I expected to secure a placement, for a number of reasons. I received rejections from some companies who explained they had already taken on their quota or were not accepting any creative internship at that particular time. Some replies were received rather late and I did not receive replies to some of my requests.

To conclude, I still found this module the most hardest and challenging. I was able to complete the smaller briefs on time. However, I needed my collaborators part of the work to complete our collaboration briefs, which took a while to receive due to their own briefs needed to be completed. There were also times that I exceeded over my briefs timescale, as it took longer to produce and make. For future reference I will be more prepare and aware when it comes to collaborations work especially working in the industry that relays on communication between designers to meet the final outcomes on time and not left to the last week.

Study Task 08 - Typesetting

In this session, we had to look into the re-typeset of Lewis Carroll's - A Mouses Tale using a postmodern approach and a modernist approach. Lewis Carroll's - A Mouses Tale Original  The Mouse's Tale by Lewis Carroll   "Mine is a long and a sad tale!" said the Mouse, turning to Alice, and sighing. "It is a long tail, certainly," said Alice, looking down with wonder at the Mouse's  tail; "but why do you call it sad?" And she kept on puzzling about it while the  Mouse was speaking, so that her idea of the tale was something like this:— Fury  said to a mouse, That he met in the house,  “Let us both go to law: I will  prosecute you.” Come, I'll take no denial, We must have a trial, For really this  morning I've nothing to do. Said the mouse to the cur,  “Such a trial, dear sir,   With no jury or judge,  would be wasting our breath.” “I’ll be judge, I'll be jury”Said cunning old Fury;  “I’ll try the...

Studio Brief 01 - How Do You Read? - Second Development

In this blog, I have finish printing out the physical  small publication book of Design Principles. I believe this second  development work was successful as the colours of the type has  been nicely and evenly printed out.The information on the  pages are arranged properly in the right order as to the the one  on the Macbook. However, I need to chose a different type of paper  stock which is much sturdier, e.g - card stock. As when I put the rubber band around the spine of the book it curls. Even though the  visuals of the book is very minimalistic and simple I believe this is  appropriate to the audience who would read this kind of book context.  Especially, for young students who want to learn the right knowledge  and information of design principles, whilst becoming a Graphic Designer. For the colour scheme I went for a very neutral yet colourful scheme,  as these colours only outline the significant factors of Design...

OUGD603 | Extended Practice | Brief 03 | Development - Publication Layout design - Leah | BBC (Our Generation) - Life being British Born Chinese

Publication Layout - Leah For the inside of the 'Our Generation' publication, the collaborator Leah was in charge of this  brief's outcome segment. The publication's layout was constructed with 'Adobe Indesign' Leah made guide lines and measurements to help assist where the Photographs and the text should be placed. Illustrations of a paint brush stroke was experimented to give the pages more characteristics. We mutually agreed to make the size of the publication A5 format, and the number of pages are 16. Previously it was going to be 17, however one participant was unable to provided us with their childhood photo for us. Due to this situation Leah had to be more selective with the photos and information (Quotes) that we believe was significant for outlining our briefs context.  Below are some images of this layout format: Participant page order by names: Katie Sung  Leah Chen  Jackie Wan Tracey Lau Eliza Mo Kylie Lee Lewis Capper...
