Studio Brief 01 | Leeds Public Spaces | Sketches & Designs of the Popular Events

After choosing the Popular events within the city of Leeds. I began to do some sketches of the posters designs of the selected events that I had chosen: 'International film festival, International beer festival, and Leeds indie food festival'.

Below are some examples of some quick sketches of the following three events:

Leeds international film festival

For the three sketches that I have drew, I wanted to emphasis the meaning of the word 'international' as Leeds show a variety amount of global films. Yet I wanted to bring in the 'fun' aspect of the festival in. To associate this kind of aspect I did some very illustrative cinematic equipment.

I added a global to represent the 'international' elements. To make my illustrations visually readable, I made these objects that all countries can understand like semiotics.

In addition I also put the logo of the event as the audience will be able to know what even is being celebrated.

Leeds international beer festival

For the three designs for the beer event. I tried to express the classy yet trendy the event is.
Especially to the target audience which this event is targeted towards to. The audience is range to 20 and above meaning the event needs to attract not only the younger generation, the older ones to.

I tried to reinforce the selection of beers which are available in this particular event by showing the different sizes of glasses.

The event also comes with food, to highlight this I believe it would be a good idea to bring finger food into this. For example: nuts in a bowl.

Then for the other design, I have also added the logo of this beer event. The logo has become a coaster for the beer glass to be on.

Leeds indie food festival

For the indie food festival, I found it challenging to express this well known and celebrated event on a poster. I had a bit of an experimentation with a selection of type of foods. But they looked to simple for an 'international' standard.

Then I tried to spell the name of the festival with the food. However, this was also quite difficult to create. Especially when I try to draw it digitally on the mac for the screen printing process. Due to the amount of detail put of the food, I believe this might be hard for the detail to come out on screen printing work.

Therefore, I believe I will not do this event for my final piece A3 poster.

Overall, I would like to either screen print the 'Leeds international film festival' or 'Leeds international beer festival'. The reasoning for this is that I mostly like the designs that I have created for both posters. I will also be getting feedback from peers and tutors to also help me decide on which one to screen print for my final piece.

Once this has been decided I will start experimenting with colours for the screen print process and outlining the designs digitally. With a more define outline the line will be more prominent when against emulsion.

Publication Layout - Leah For the inside of the 'Our Generation' publication, the collaborator Leah was in charge of this  brief's outcome segment. The publication's layout was constructed with 'Adobe Indesign' Leah made guide lines and measurements to help assist where the Photographs and the text should be placed. Illustrations of a paint brush stroke was experimented to give the pages more characteristics. We mutually agreed to make the size of the publication A5 format, and the number of pages are 16. Previously it was going to be 17, however one participant was unable to provided us with their childhood photo for us. Due to this situation Leah had to be more selective with the photos and information (Quotes) that we believe was significant for outlining our briefs context.  Below are some images of this layout format: Participant page order by names: Katie Sung  Leah Chen  Jackie Wan Tracey Lau Eliza Mo Kylie Lee Lewis Capper...

Katie always  communicated very well. We were both impressed with how she incorporated the feedback we gave into her designs, s he always consciously and aware of what we wanted overall, sent many new variations of the logo designs, always referred back to feedback and messaged us for specific information (e.g. Business card enquires) and she was able to explained her designs to us and how it would be much better (i.e. change of the colour scheme).  To conclude the final results were great.  I would highly recommend Kati...

Jan Tschichold - Grids

Feedback from Tutor of Publication After  receiving  feedback from my tutor, he informed me to use grids within arranging my layout of my publication pages. This will keep my images and text in a consistent manner, thus making it visually professional. To achieve this precise layout, I will research on Jan Tschichold Grid System. This will allow me, to understand this type of matter of using a grid.  Jan Tschichold Jan Tschichold was a typographer, book designer, teacher and writer  (2 April 1902  Leipzig ,  Germany  – 11 August 1974  Locarno ,  Switzerland ) .
