Studio Brief 01 | Leeds Public Spaces | Development - Vector & Colours

Development of Sketches
After the previous feedback from my quick sketches of the celebrated events that I selected to design. I continued with drawing a digital outline of these posters designs, as a vector then transferring the vector into Photoshop to experiment colours - that my peers & tutors advised me to do.

Vector Designs
'Leeds International Film Festival'
'Leeds International Beer Festival'

Film Festival Typefaces - Experimentation
LittleLordFontleroy - Typeface
Carrington - Typeface

Above - Typeface

For the 'International film festival' I wanted the selection of typeface that I have chosen to represented the red carpet yet cinematic aspect. For example the typeface for when the film finishes 'The End'. And the other just a simple contemporary typeface capitalised to make the title stand out to the eye.

When testing these typefaces on the illustrative poster design, the movie typefaces does not look powerful as the contemporary typeface. This is why I will use the 'Above' typeface for this particular poster.

Beer Festival Typefaces - Experimentation

'Helvetica' - Typeface
'Futura' - Typeface

'Montserrat' - Typeface

For the 'International Beer Festival' the concept is aimed at young adults and above. So I believe that it is appropriate to the make the typeface modern and contemporary that the audience will recognise this beer trend. To test these chosen typefaces I put them along the logo coaster which is shown above.

Overall, I believe Futura is the most suitable typeface for this concept as the letters go well when curved and are more bold. This will be good, when being screen printing of the thickness of the letters.

Film Festival - Colour Experimentation
Gold, White & Black
Gold, Red, White & Black

Black, Silver & White
When it came to colour experimentation, I tested the above colours against each other. In particularly I wanted the colours to represent a 'red carpet' concept. By using metallic colours such as gold and silver. I will also add some foiling onto the poster as it looks like confetti - this will indicate the celebratory symbol of the event. The red poster really show this depiction.

I tried with other colours like the blue, however it did not have the same effect. The colours that I used for the blue poster gives a very cold effect than celebration colours.

Overall, I believe if I was to choose out of the three designs. I will screen print the red poster with the gold and black colours.

Beer Festival - Colour Experimentation

Brown, Yellow, Bronze, White & Black
Bronze, Brown, Gold, White, Blue & Black

Black, White, Black, Blue, Brown & Bronze
When experimenting colour choices for the 'beer festival'. I tested with colours above against each other to create that contemporary/trendy aspect. The yellow came out a bit strong of this colour scheme, there is to much of a big contrast between the others.

The the poster with the gold and blue works really work together, however the colour is not as vivid and eye catching enough for a wall display.

Final Design to Screen Print
For the final verdict of what event/event design I should screen print for my final print. I received feedback from both my peers and tutors, majority of the votes appointed the 'Leeds international film festival' - red, gold, black and gold design. Which I also agree on that is one of my best designs for this kind of brief.

Studio Brief 01 - How Do You Read? - Second Development

In this blog, I have finish printing out the physical  small publication book of Design Principles. I believe this second  development work was successful as the colours of the type has  been nicely and evenly printed out.The information on the  pages are arranged properly in the right order as to the the one  on the Macbook. However, I need to chose a different type of paper  stock which is much sturdier, e.g - card stock. As when I put the rubber band around the spine of the book it curls. Even though the  visuals of the book is very minimalistic and simple I believe this is  appropriate to the audience who would read this kind of book context.  Especially, for young students who want to learn the right knowledge  and information of design principles, whilst becoming a Graphic Designer. For the colour scheme I went for a very neutral yet colourful scheme,  as these colours only outline the significant factors of Design...

Studio Brief 01 - Secret 7: Final Design

In this design board, I have chosen this Record Sleeve design cover to be my final  submission for the live brief - Secret 7. I particular favoured this design as it really  portrayed the artists song and style well as the variety of the different shades of blue tones gave a good theme for the overall concept of the chosen lyric that I selected. “You were the perfect star. Again describing the meaning of the design will be yet again explained here. The symbolism  of the star is similar to a heart of the person who is going through a heart break thus this  is similar feeling when the break bit is being cracked like glass. The glass look makes it  highlight that the person’s heart is very sensitive and weak and the colours of the different  shades/tones of blue express their unhappiness and also how innocent and pure they are. The way the star outline repeats depicts how the person is slowing forgetting the perfect star  which has broken the heart...

Objectivity - Subjectivity

Evaluation: Overall, my final evaluation including looking at my peers/year tutors feedback of my logotype. Has shown that I needed to do more research into my colours, as I tried to stick with the original colours of the current logo of Krispy Kreme. As my last critique group told me to stick with them without changing it. Some liked and disliked the outline of the typography as some say it looked like icing, whilst others said it would be better if it were fuller so it makes more of an impact. Most of the comment was about the bad colour choices of the Green as it has connotations of an industrial, chemical and unhealthy look. But some said it could have connotations of high sugar as for a donut. Everyone recognised the doughnut shape for the logo, some saw the neon letter as an American diner look as my critique group told me to stay with the retro look. One of my others peers comment, that the use of the contrast between the Sans Serifs and Serif typography is appropriate to d...
