Design for Screen - Looking into User face Interactions

During this session, we were assigned into groups and to create a spider diagram of existing user face interaction that we can think of. Then give each user face interaction, the problems that may occur when using them.

User face Interactions
  • Interests / Entertainment: Kindle, Game consoles, Karaoke, Internet (browsers), Radio, TV.
  • Social Media: WhatsApp, Instagram, Email Services, Twitter, Tumbler, Snapchat, Skype / FaceTime, Facebook.
  • Streaming: Itunes, Youtube, Spotify
  • General: Security Systems, Sat-Nav, Vending machine?, Self-checkouts, Cash machine / ATM, Banking, Kitchen appliances, Exercise Equipment.
Problems when using some of these Userface Interactions
  • For the Radio - Having to memorise channels to get what you want or having to flick through multiple - quite tedious.
  • Kindle - Older version - tedious to find something - get frustrating
  • Skype/Facetime - In a group chat, gets annoying trying then windows switches or finding options to share screen, use chat box, etc.
  • iTunes - Can't find album artwork, frustrating when there is disorganisation, Apple interface in general is quite irritating - constantly asking to login etc.
  • Sat-Nav - Reliable + up-to-date "real time"
  • Cash Machines / ATM - Fast + reliable, able to provide what you want without going through complications
  • Banking - Security
  • Security systems - Problems: sometimes doesn't work e.g. getting into university - card sometimes doesn't let you through, fast to use, student accommodation - problem of a lot of people having same key card to get in, comfort of knowing it is safe.
  • Game consoles - Great navigation systems knowing what channel you want to play: browsing on the internet, play the game from the disc, system settings. Problems, controllers to the console get lost, not all controllers are wireless, consoles over heats and not always respond to the orders you want it to do etc.
  • Karaoke - In a karaoke place, the screen is a (touch screen) to control which songs you want to sing are very sensitive and you select the wrong songs. The layout of the screen is quite confusing and complicated. It can change to different language which is helpful if someone who prefers to read in their own language.
  • Internet (Browsers) - Very straight forward system, has a search bar to go on other search engines, can find anything you are looking for, has an option to either bookmark or save a website page, has a forward and backwards button. Unhelpful, when there is no wifi or internet is slow.
  • TV - Great source for entertainment, depending on the service you go with. For example: Sky TV is a very reliable TV service, the layout to find what channels you want to watch are clear: Films, Children, Sports, All channels etc. Problems: only the remote control can only select the channels, if you lose the controller impossible to select the channel.
  • WhatsApp - Another "text" message system like text message. Instead it uses the internet to send the messages, can send videos and pictures for free, you can also call people from your contacts (via - mobile number, you can see if the recipient can see the message or if they are online. Disadvantages - this can only work via wifi or mobile data, when you accidentally delete a conversation, it is difficult to find, doesn't always save the previous conversation if you switch to a new phone and so on.
  • Instagram - Another form of social media by posting pictures of interests. You can follow people and some can follow you back, layout is easy to understand, there is a section for the people you follow and you cans see their photos, next is a search for other people of interest to you, search by popular hashtags, a camera icon to upload either pictures or videos on your profile page, the heart icon to show who has like, comment, who is following you, see what your followers like. Then a profile page for your pictures, and information about you. You can also set your profile on private and you can only select who can follow you or not.
  • Email Services - Depending on what email system you use, for example: Yahoo email is not a good service, it keeps asking to update and taking mobile number. Does not always send an email.
  • Snapchat - A form of social media of sending pictures to each other, could accidentally send a picture to someone you didn't want to send to.
  • Facebook - A social media to see what friends are doing, they can post statuses, pictures, videos, message friends online and so on.
  • Youtube - A streaming website to watch videos online of what is your interests. You can also subscribe to channels of what videos they make, upload videos of your own.
  • Self-checkouts - When shopping in a supermarket, there are some self check out tills which are more convenient. However, the disadvantages of using self check out is that there are always problems when scanning the item, the till not registering items in the bag, and buying alcohol needs staff to allow them to buy it.
  • Kitchen appliances - microwave, oven etc. All involve pressing buttons to active the heat setting

Objectivity - Subjectivity

Evaluation: Overall, my final evaluation including looking at my peers/year tutors feedback of my logotype. Has shown that I needed to do more research into my colours, as I tried to stick with the original colours of the current logo of Krispy Kreme. As my last critique group told me to stick with them without changing it. Some liked and disliked the outline of the typography as some say it looked like icing, whilst others said it would be better if it were fuller so it makes more of an impact. Most of the comment was about the bad colour choices of the Green as it has connotations of an industrial, chemical and unhealthy look. But some said it could have connotations of high sugar as for a donut. Everyone recognised the doughnut shape for the logo, some saw the neon letter as an American diner look as my critique group told me to stay with the retro look. One of my others peers comment, that the use of the contrast between the Sans Serifs and Serif typography is appropriate to d...

'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' - by Armand Mevis (Notes/Analysis)

During this session, we look into and analysis an essay called 'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' by Armand Mevis.  The whole class did a group discussion, we shared some significant quotes within the essay that relates to our brief Type in Context: ' All these books have to be designed. Someone needs to decide which paper, typography, cover, to use'.  'It may be a jungle; you may find it hard to get the nice job, and you might get lost, but that is part of the adventure'.  Mistakes are inherent to the job of making books through trial and error'.  Over the years we have learned to limit the number of mistake; we are now much more in control'.  'Ideally, all books start with a question. The clearer the question, the more precise the answer'.  'As designers we are as responsible for content as anyone else'. 'Some books arrived in plastic bags like garbage, stac...

Studio Brief 01 - How Do You Read? - Second Development

In this blog, I have finish printing out the physical  small publication book of Design Principles. I believe this second  development work was successful as the colours of the type has  been nicely and evenly printed out.The information on the  pages are arranged properly in the right order as to the the one  on the Macbook. However, I need to chose a different type of paper  stock which is much sturdier, e.g - card stock. As when I put the rubber band around the spine of the book it curls. Even though the  visuals of the book is very minimalistic and simple I believe this is  appropriate to the audience who would read this kind of book context.  Especially, for young students who want to learn the right knowledge  and information of design principles, whilst becoming a Graphic Designer. For the colour scheme I went for a very neutral yet colourful scheme,  as these colours only outline the significant factors of Design...
