Type in Context - Paper Print Test

In the Digital print room slot, I had some time to do to some paper printing test for my publication pages. There were two types of papers that I experimented with: o ne of the papers was a crystal or pure white colour, with a bit of a glossy shine to it.  Overall, the images on this particular paper came out very well. The colours of my photographs of Switzerland and the Lake District were very similar to the colours on my Macbook. However, I could adjust the colours slightly as some images were a tiny bit darker compared to others. I especially wanted the colours of the rural scenery colours to stand out more as well as the colours of the typography signages.  For the other paper which was the more creamy colour. Again there were good results, the images on the pages of my publication came out well onto the paper. This paper also has a bit of a shine to it, giving the photos a professional polish. But with this particular...

Type in Context - Pyrography Design Practice

By following the sketches design for the front cover of the publication. I have done some experimentation of the pryography designs, that I had sketched out. First I did a rough sketch outline of the design, I did this by transfering the sketch in my sketchbook on tracing paper, then tracing over the sketch on the back of the tracing. This whill then allow me to transfer the lead mark onto the wooden A4 sheet in the correct side.  After that, before going over the print design with the pryography pen. I practiced using the pryography pen, especially when the pryography pen has various type of tips. During the few attempts of doing different strokes and lines, the tip that I used to outline my design and adding textures was the thinnest tip. This is because, the thinnest tip has more control whilst the thicker tips where more challeging to control, specifically for outlining strokes. What also made the thicker tip more difficult to control was the amount of pressure, I would ei...

Type in Context - Choosing Typography for publication

In this blog I am researching which typography/typeface would be the most acceptable for the Type in Context publication that is being initially constructed. During my feedback session from the previous critiques, many of my peers and tutors said the Sans Serif typefaces will be the most applicable for this type of prototype.  This is also strengthened by the target audience I would like to make sure that everyone of all ages are able to read it well. Therefore the font should be something which is Sans serif than Serif, this also makes the book look more inviting compared to the traditional classical calligraphy typefaces. This maybe be less appealing of the younger target audience, as they would think it is too  authoritative, professional for them to read.  The Sans Serif typefaces I will be looking into are the following: Helvetica, Futura,  Proxima Nova, Brandon Grotesque and Gotham. Helvetica Helvetica was develope...

Type in Context - Indesign Layout

In this blog, I have done some Indesign layouts for the Type in context publication brief  Again, I have followed my layout sketches for where the images and texts with be place.  Numerous of pictures on each page Within these layout designs there will be some whihc will be more photography based. Some will have a little bit of text or context to explain the photos and another may has some directional guidance as that maybe the function of the publication. To locate the users to their chosen destinations.  Below are some screenshots of four different ways that I am going to layout my publication:  Square & circle themed Less pictures but more bigger space for the photography Less amount of space for the photography, but the square/rectangle are consistent InDesign Layouts and Photographs Grids By making my  publication  more accurate in...

Type in Context - Publication Development (sketches & layout)

In this blog, I have done some sketches on how I would like to layout my publication. This is inspired by layouts of other photography publications that I found online and in the library. I have also made a key to explain where I would like the images and text to be within the publication. I have drawn out four different layout ideas, I will be asking peers and tutors which one would be the most suitable for this type of concept and if it will convey well. Then I will be able to put this into a Indesign format so I can visually see how it is printed, us the binding techniques that I wanted to experiment with. Here are images below to show my layout ideas:  I have also sketched out some hard cover designs for the front cover of my publication, I wanted to go with a very traditional concept with this especially with the wood texture as it would associate with the rural image that I...

Jan Tschichold - Grids

Feedback from Tutor of Publication After  receiving  feedback from my tutor, he informed me to use grids within arranging my layout of my publication pages. This will keep my images and text in a consistent manner, thus making it visually professional. To achieve this precise layout, I will research on Jan Tschichold Grid System. This will allow me, to understand this type of matter of using a grid.  Jan Tschichold Jan Tschichold was a typographer, book designer, teacher and writer  (2 April 1902  Leipzig ,  Germany  – 11 August 1974  Locarno ,  Switzerland ) . Tschichold's Grid System Fibonacci & Golden Ratio Fibonacci sequence ratio 8:13 links to the Golden section. This sequence is not only evident within design but also nature. 1.62 -  Forms the basis of paper sizes and its principles can be used as a means of achieving balanced designs . Many ancient cultures from Egyptian...
