Type in Context - Peer Crits Feedback

In this critique we were put into groups for feedback on Proposals for our Type in context publication. We had to at least come up with a minimum of two idea to present to the critique, once I have the most votes on which idea to do. I will further develop my publication, by thinking about the size of the publication, type of typography, binding method, type of materials used, commercial process, how many pages, how much information and so on.

My two ideas I had for the type of publication concept was either between:

British & Swiss typography or International Rural Signage.

Overall most of my peers and tutor preferred the second idea, which is the International Rural Signage. The reason why they preferred this idea more compared to the British & Swiss typography one was because, the concept of showing the modern vs the traditional typefaces has already been done. As well as, the concept of comparing typefaces has been overly used and it is not quite as interesting. In addition, my photos that I captured of Switzerland and the Lake District typefaces were very similar.

Whilst the International Rural Signage, is more intriguing and unusual kind of publication concept. This is because it is fascinating to see how rural typography and signage has not been modified or altered during the past. Especially for hiking or countryside places where signs or way finding is very important for the users. People in my critique group agreed with my chosen target audience being mainly targeted at adventurers, hikers and historians. They believe it was apportiate to make this type of publication a guide photography book for cafes within the walks as a destination stop (similar to a coffee table book) for these type of users. For the designing side of the publication, they would like to see the book having a wood hard cover. They advise me to look into pyrography designs to help me during my design developing stages when constructing the book. They also guided me to make my publication in a A4 size as my pictures are well taken, it will be good to see both the style of typography and the scenery behind it. Another instruct my tutor gave me was to maybe get some maps of the area and put them next to my pictures to point out to my audience the location the place. And even some red thread to string the photographs to the map.

In conclusion, I will carry on with my Type in Context International Rural signage type publication. I will follow what my tutor and peers have advise me on during this critique, because of their advise I will be able to commence with developing and experimenting my publication.

Publication Layout - Leah For the inside of the 'Our Generation' publication, the collaborator Leah was in charge of this  brief's outcome segment. The publication's layout was constructed with 'Adobe Indesign' Leah made guide lines and measurements to help assist where the Photographs and the text should be placed. Illustrations of a paint brush stroke was experimented to give the pages more characteristics. We mutually agreed to make the size of the publication A5 format, and the number of pages are 16. Previously it was going to be 17, however one participant was unable to provided us with their childhood photo for us. Due to this situation Leah had to be more selective with the photos and information (Quotes) that we believe was significant for outlining our briefs context.  Below are some images of this layout format: Participant page order by names: Katie Sung  Leah Chen  Jackie Wan Tracey Lau Eliza Mo Kylie Lee Lewis Capper...

Study Task 08 - Typesetting

In this session, we had to look into the re-typeset of Lewis Carroll's - A Mouses Tale using a postmodern approach and a modernist approach. Lewis Carroll's - A Mouses Tale Original  The Mouse's Tale by Lewis Carroll   "Mine is a long and a sad tale!" said the Mouse, turning to Alice, and sighing. "It is a long tail, certainly," said Alice, looking down with wonder at the Mouse's  tail; "but why do you call it sad?" And she kept on puzzling about it while the  Mouse was speaking, so that her idea of the tale was something like this:— Fury  said to a mouse, That he met in the house,  “Let us both go to law: I will  prosecute you.” Come, I'll take no denial, We must have a trial, For really this  morning I've nothing to do. Said the mouse to the cur,  “Such a trial, dear sir,   With no jury or judge,  would be wasting our breath.” “I’ll be judge, I'll be jury”Said cunning old Fury;  “I’ll try the...

Studio Brief 01 - How Do You Read? - Second Development

In this blog, I have finish printing out the physical  small publication book of Design Principles. I believe this second  development work was successful as the colours of the type has  been nicely and evenly printed out.The information on the  pages are arranged properly in the right order as to the the one  on the Macbook. However, I need to chose a different type of paper  stock which is much sturdier, e.g - card stock. As when I put the rubber band around the spine of the book it curls. Even though the  visuals of the book is very minimalistic and simple I believe this is  appropriate to the audience who would read this kind of book context.  Especially, for young students who want to learn the right knowledge  and information of design principles, whilst becoming a Graphic Designer. For the colour scheme I went for a very neutral yet colourful scheme,  as these colours only outline the significant factors of Design...
