Type in Context Proposal Ideas

During todays session, we were told to write a formal proposal for our critiques on the Type in Context brief. This included:
  • Two ideas we had in mind for the publication?
  • What the purpose of the publication is?
  • The production method? (How quickly can it be produced? How much will it cost?
  • Who is the target audience for the publication?
Here are my proposals done, by mind mapping it first then to a formal form for the critiques:

IDEA 01 – Swiss & British Typography

For my Proposal idea for my Type in context publication, is to produce a Graphic Design book about the difference typefaces from the UK and the Swiss (Switzerland). The target audience of this publication will be either Graphic designers/typographers. The purpose of this publication is to inform them the differences of typefaces from different countries, by the use of way finding signage etc. The concept of this will be either the Modern VS Traditional or Swiss VS British. The production methods of building the publication will either be the following, my publication is very photography based so it will be appropriate to print my picture out in glossy paper. Next the construction of the book, this will be either one of the binding methods: section sewn, perfect binding and so on. The cover of the publication will be either a soft to medium paper cover, as it is not going to be use that frequently. It is more of a kind of publication to look at. There might be some foiling embossing on the cover to make it more eye catching and look sophisticated.

IDEA 02 – International Rural Signage
Another proposal idea for my Type in context publication is to create a tourist guidebook for travellers. This is demonstrated through the use of international rural signage, and how in two different countries its rural aesthetic stays the same. The target audience is mainly targeted at adventurers, hikers and historians. The purpose of this publication is to inform the readers that the past rural signage has stayed the same like they have previously. The concept, is supposed to be rural, nature, countryside and traditional visual outlook. For the production methods, again this book is very photography based with a little bit of text notify, where the photo was take, which area is it from etc. Therefore the picture pages will be printed out in glossy paper. For the binding method, I will either be using the following types of binding: saddle stitching, wire binding or spiral binding, this will need to be quite durable for coffee book. For the cover of the publication, I will do a hard cover, either from wood one the I might emboss it will some kind of traditional rural pattern. However, this might be a long progress to make. So an alternative might need to be made.

Down below is spider diagram of my planning:

'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' - by Armand Mevis (Notes/Analysis)

During this session, we look into and analysis an essay called 'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' by Armand Mevis.  The whole class did a group discussion, we shared some significant quotes within the essay that relates to our brief Type in Context: ' All these books have to be designed. Someone needs to decide which paper, typography, cover, to use'.  'It may be a jungle; you may find it hard to get the nice job, and you might get lost, but that is part of the adventure'.  Mistakes are inherent to the job of making books through trial and error'.  Over the years we have learned to limit the number of mistake; we are now much more in control'.  'Ideally, all books start with a question. The clearer the question, the more precise the answer'.  'As designers we are as responsible for content as anyone else'. 'Some books arrived in plastic bags like garbage, stac...

Studio Brief 01 - Logotype, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

In todays session, Simon Harrison gave the class a brief about redesigning a logo for brand that we have chosen. But this time we were told to do this individually. The logo we were allowed to choose could be any type of brand to redesign. However, it either had to be an international or nation brand. So for the start of this brief I went into the shopping district Trinity in Leeds, to find a logo of brand and re-create it to make it more updated or fresh. There are some images of the shops within Trinity that I considered to redesign: Once I have chosen a shop logo which I want to redesign, need to focus on by using only type. I have to experiment with stroke, scale, spacing, contrast and alignment to interpret my chosen company. I need to consider the following: Who is the company? What do they do? Who is the target audience? Where will the logo appear? Chosen Shop logo to redesign - Krispy Kreme, Doughnuts   The shop that I wanted to r...

Ideas for Type in Context Publication

IDEAS In this blog post, I have found some examples on how I would like to layout my Type in Context Publication. As my target audience is aimed at people who like hikers and historians. This type of publication will inform the readers how our way finding signages have stayed the same rural design. For the amount of text I want within my publication, the direction of where this publication is going will only be a minimum amount of text. This maybe only just an introduction page and possibly a content page.  The publication will either be a rural guide book or a coffee book for cafe where tourist/hikers/cyclist and so on, stop to have a break for some refreshments. The target audience of this specific type of publication will be at a demographic (geographical).  To create this type of publication, I will use Indesign to help me arrange and layout my pictures. This will then be easier for me to print it out professionally.  The siz...
