Design for Screen - Emirates & British Airways Airline

Research of existing Airlines
Emirates
Emirates is an airline based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The airline is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group, which is wholly owned by the government of Dubai's Investment Corporation of Dubai. It is the largest airline in the Middle East.

Inflight entertainment system
Emirates became one of the first airlines in the world to introduce a personal entertainment system on a commercial aircraft in 1992. All three classes feature a personal in-flight entertainment (IFE) system on Emirates aircraft. There are two types of entertainment system on Emirates: ICE and ICE Digital Widescreen.

Emirates has won the award for best in-flight-entertainment from Skytrax for their ICE system every year since the system's inception in 2003. At present, almost 70% of the fleet has the ice in-flight entertainment and by 2011 the entire Emirates fleet is set to have the system. ICE offers more channels than any other in-flight entertainment system.

ICE (Information, Communication, Entertainment) is the in-flight entertainment system operated by Emirates.

Information
The system is based on the 3000i system from Panasonic Avionics Corporation. ICE provides passengers with a direct data link to BBC News. ICE is the first IFE system to be connected directly to automatic news updates. Exterior cameras located on the aircraft can be viewed by any passenger, through the IFE system, during takeoff, cruise and landing. Emirates was also one of the first airlines to introduce high-speed, in-flight Internet service and offer live international television broadcasts using the same system.

Communication
ICE has a link to an in-flight email server which allows passengers to access, send or receive emails for US$1 per message. ICE also supports a seat-to-seat chat service.

Entertainment
The ICE system includes movies, music, and video games. ICE offers over 600 on-demand movie titles, over 2000 video on demand and prerecorded television channels, over 1000 hours of music and over 100 video-game titles. ICE can be accessed in more than 40 languages including English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Korean, Thai, Italian and Japanese. Since 2003 all entertainment options are available on demand to all classes with options to pause, forward, and rewind them.

Emirates design

Typeface - called EK and is a custom typeface designed exclusively for Emirates, presumably to echo the calligraphic forms of the Arabic in the logo. The colour scheme of Emirates is red and white, this is for their personal trademark.

British Airways
British Airways, often shortened to BA, is the flag carrier and the largest airline in the United Kingdom based on fleet size. When measured by passengers carried, it is second-largest in the United Kingdom behind easyJet.

Inflight entertainment system
BA has a new inflight entertainment system called High Life Entertainment pages, with this new system this makes it even easier for users to browse the wide selection of content that will be available on their flight. They will be able to discover new and exciting developments around Entertainment at British Airways.

A new feature of the site is My Entertainment Plan, where passengers and users can plan what to watch and discover how much entertainment that they can squeeze in for the duration of your flight.

British Airways Design
British Airways typeface is called Mylius Modern.

Corporate typeface developed to a WGL character set for BA. This typeface is a simplified version of Mylius, developed by Rodney Mylius, Robin Nicholas and the team at Monotype.
For BA their colour scheme consist of the colours, blue, red, grey and white.

Publication Layout - Leah For the inside of the 'Our Generation' publication, the collaborator Leah was in charge of this  brief's outcome segment. The publication's layout was constructed with 'Adobe Indesign' Leah made guide lines and measurements to help assist where the Photographs and the text should be placed. Illustrations of a paint brush stroke was experimented to give the pages more characteristics. We mutually agreed to make the size of the publication A5 format, and the number of pages are 16. Previously it was going to be 17, however one participant was unable to provided us with their childhood photo for us. Due to this situation Leah had to be more selective with the photos and information (Quotes) that we believe was significant for outlining our briefs context.  Below are some images of this layout format: Participant page order by names: Katie Sung  Leah Chen  Jackie Wan Tracey Lau Eliza Mo Kylie Lee Lewis Capper...

Studio Brief 01 - How Do You Read? - Second Development

In this blog, I have finish printing out the physical  small publication book of Design Principles. I believe this second  development work was successful as the colours of the type has  been nicely and evenly printed out.The information on the  pages are arranged properly in the right order as to the the one  on the Macbook. However, I need to chose a different type of paper  stock which is much sturdier, e.g - card stock. As when I put the rubber band around the spine of the book it curls. Even though the  visuals of the book is very minimalistic and simple I believe this is  appropriate to the audience who would read this kind of book context.  Especially, for young students who want to learn the right knowledge  and information of design principles, whilst becoming a Graphic Designer. For the colour scheme I went for a very neutral yet colourful scheme,  as these colours only outline the significant factors of Design...

OUGD603 | Extended Practice | Brief 09 | Development - Sketches & Ideas | OOHDEER Brief - Pitch A Papergang competition!

Inspirations By considering examples from previous Papergang boxes, Paperchase's Collection and Muji's minimalistic approach. Japanese origami has greatly inspired the theme for the Papergang box.  The images below convey the influence of the decided theme/pattern for the Papergang box. Both Origami Cranes and Stars are very simple yet vividly attractive especially how both origami pieces are three-dimensional. This could be an authentic and popular trend for stationary products.      Initial Sketches The initial sketches are illustrations versions of the origami stars and cranes from the images above. The idea of these illustrations were to make them imitate the real origami pieces by keeping them three dimensional yet  emblematic . The stars and cranes can be more distinguishable this way for consumers to recognise them to the real origami.  Illustrator Vectors After deciding which illustrations looked ideal  as the r...
