Type in Context - Evaluation of Publication

To evaluate my Type in Context Publication, I believe I have done a highly decent job. The reasoning of this is because; it is my second time constructing a publication brief from last year. Last year when making a publication, I struggled a lot as I had no experience making one before. I did not consider using Indesign and grids to help me line up and organised my photographs to my text (making a better consistency). Whilst this time I used this laying out method, which made my work look more professional.

Doing more mock ups and tests on different type for colour textured papers was helpful to see what type of quality I wanted for my publication. In addition I was not able to experiment on the G.F SMITH stock paper, as they did not arrive on time. I could of made my book look and feel more professional in the aesthetic aspects of the publication outcome.  By using the G.F SMITH stock paper that I ordered I could of experimented more on different textured of book covers.

Nevertheless, the commercial production side of the publication was quite challenging. The reasoning of this was because the digital printing room was very busy with other students from different course and some in my course. The process time to book a slot without it matching my other session was difficult to avoid. Especially when I wanted to do some test printing.

When it came to the binding methods when constructing my publication. I wanted to try various types, unfortunately time caught up with me. Therefore I did not do as many as I wanted to. The ones I did were very simple and basic, and not ambiguous enough. When I was binding the final publication, I did an ambiguous binding this was the Coptic binding. It was my second attempt doing this and I were pleased enough with the outcome.

The pyrography design for the hard cover was very satisfying to create. At first using the pyrography pen, problematic initially. The explanation for this was, when doing some practice tests I had the incorrect tip of the pen placed. This made it difficult for me to have precision and control of the lines. But after a few practices and replacing the tip of the pyrography pen I was able to get the correct design printed on my hard cover. I also believe doing this way for printing my design on my hard cover is not professional and convenient, it might have been appropriate to get a metal stamp to print my design than drawing it freestyle.

For this brief, I did enjoy the part of making the publication when experimenting with textured paper, various amount of binding methods and using pyrography to print my design onto a wooden A4 sheet as my hard cover. However, what I found challenging the most was figuring out the context of the publication, the concept it will convey and laying out the images and text onto Indesign.

Publication Layout - Leah For the inside of the 'Our Generation' publication, the collaborator Leah was in charge of this  brief's outcome segment. The publication's layout was constructed with 'Adobe Indesign' Leah made guide lines and measurements to help assist where the Photographs and the text should be placed. Illustrations of a paint brush stroke was experimented to give the pages more characteristics. We mutually agreed to make the size of the publication A5 format, and the number of pages are 16. Previously it was going to be 17, however one participant was unable to provided us with their childhood photo for us. Due to this situation Leah had to be more selective with the photos and information (Quotes) that we believe was significant for outlining our briefs context.  Below are some images of this layout format: Participant page order by names: Katie Sung  Leah Chen  Jackie Wan Tracey Lau Eliza Mo Kylie Lee Lewis Capper...

Katie always  communicated very well. We were both impressed with how she incorporated the feedback we gave into her designs, s he always consciously and aware of what we wanted overall, sent many new variations of the logo designs, always referred back to feedback and messaged us for specific information (e.g. Business card enquires) and she was able to explained her designs to us and how it would be much better (i.e. change of the colour scheme).  To conclude the final results were great.  I would highly recommend Kati...

Jan Tschichold - Grids

Feedback from Tutor of Publication After  receiving  feedback from my tutor, he informed me to use grids within arranging my layout of my publication pages. This will keep my images and text in a consistent manner, thus making it visually professional. To achieve this precise layout, I will research on Jan Tschichold Grid System. This will allow me, to understand this type of matter of using a grid.  Jan Tschichold Jan Tschichold was a typographer, book designer, teacher and writer  (2 April 1902  Leipzig ,  Germany  – 11 August 1974  Locarno ,  Switzerland ) . Tschichold's Grid System Fibonacci & Golden Ratio Fibonacci sequence ratio 8:13 links to the Golden section. This sequence is not only evident within design but also nature. 1.62 -  Forms the basis of paper sizes and its principles can be used as a means of achieving balanced designs .
