Objectivity - Subjectivity

Evaluation: Overall, my final evaluation including looking at my peers/year tutors feedback of my logotype. Has shown that I needed to do more research into my colours, as I tried to stick with the original colours of the current logo of Krispy Kreme. As my last critique group told me to stick with them without changing it. Some liked and disliked the outline of the typography as some say it looked like icing, whilst others said it would be better if it were fuller so it makes more of an impact. Most of the comment was about the bad colour choices of the Green as it has connotations of an industrial, chemical and unhealthy look. But some said it could have connotations of high sugar as for a donut. Everyone recognised the doughnut shape for the logo, some saw the neon letter as an American diner look as my critique group told me to stay with the retro look. One of my others peers comment, that the use of the contrast between the Sans Serifs and Serif typography is appropriate to d...

Study Task 02 - Symbols

In this session, we were given a study task based on symbols. During this task we have to use Oti Aicher pictogram grid to design a symbol for our chosen Olympic event. By u sing only shape and colour apply your developing understanding of pictograms and symbols to develop a visual monotone symbol to effectively communicate your chosen activity. Here is the Oti Aicher pictogram gird I must work within the supplied grid to generate a range of potential responses before selecting the most appropriate, by considering the following: Audience Scale  Contrast  Impact  Clarity

Study Task 06 - What is a Book? - Book Definition

In this session we looked into more of Studio Brief 01 - How Do You Read? The Studio Brief is based on us designing and producing a small publication (booklet, leaflet, etc.) about Design Principles. By using the Study Task as a starting point of the brief I will look at other small publications and analyse them to give me a guideline of publications like these we are trying to create and produce.  Study Task 06 - Book Definition What is a Book?  The Study Task aim is to analyse a book based on the interpretation aspects it has (the action of explaining the meaning of something). Here is my book that I have chosen to analyse: Then I looked into a range of publications and analyse the purpose, production and their successes. There are some images of the analyse physical examples of publications, which include stock, binding methods, their layout, the use of their typography, colour scheme and so on...

Studio Brief 01 - How Do You Read?

In this Studio Brief 01 - How Do You Read? We need to use the range of fundamental design principles that we have been taught: Colour theory, frame & format, type & grid... Which all of them gives us a inform comprehension of the building blocks of graphic design.  Overall, our aim of the end of the Studio Brief is for us to design and produce a small publication (booklet, leaflet, etc.) that collates materials which, in turn, can communicate key factors of design principles to the reader.  These are some of the key factors of Design Principles: Gestalt Principles Colour Theory: Systematic Colour Colour Theory: Subjective Colour  Grids  Figure/Ground  Balance  Alignment  Proportions  Canons of Page Construction White Space  I may choose to look at one of these and expand it, or all of these or even a selection of these subjects which I want to present within my small publication that I will develop and ...

The Sign Lecture

The Sign Pictograms Pictograms are used to warn, guide or protect and need to be immediately decipherable. They must get to the heart of the matter by visually conveying a vital piece of information in such a way that it cannot be misunderstood, and they should therefore be internationally recognisable and independent of culture. Semiotics Semantics -  Sign and Meaning   dependent on context  dependent on knowledge  dependent on society  dependent on culture Syntactic - Formal, unambiguous, succinct  Form  Brightness Colour Movement  Material Scale  Position  Shape  Pragmatics - Indicative The burning cigarette informs the receiver that they may smoke here, but that they do not have to smoke. It is therefore up to the receiver what they do with this information. Imperative When the burning cigarette has a dash through it, the ...

Study Task - Wayfinding Research

In this session, we were told to do a Study Task based on the Wayfinding Brief as a starting point. This Study Task was based on research around the area, Leeds, we went to visit the galleries, museums and public spaces within Leeds. These are some that I have visited and photographed: Leeds Art Gallery Leeds Train Station  Leeds City Centre  Trinity  Sky Plaza (Student Halls) In these places I searched and photographed many examples of wayfinding, like signages and pictograms which are useful in these certain types of environments.
