In todays session, we went though an introduction to Editorial Design. In this powerpoint we explored different types of newspapers and analysis how they were layout by using the grid templates to make the article look organised and balanced.
The Independent Redesign
In November 2013, The Independent Newspaper unravelled a brand new look referencing the "gorgeous and radical" appearance of when the paper were first published in the year 1986.
The purpose of this redesign was to reflect the "bold" and "forthright" but "sophisticated" tone of voice of the newspaper. (On the left is the old or original design and the right is the redesign.)
Matt Willey
In 2014 the Creative Review 'Designer of the Year', was Matt Willey who was the creator of the 2013 redesign of The Independent. His editorial design portfolio included the following: Elephant Magazine, YCN Magazine, Port, the New York Times Magazine, and the RIBA Journal. There are some of his work at the bottom.
Grid & Layout
The design of the front page is radical, elegant and striking. The vertical masthead allows the long logotype to be a prominent and unapologetic element without getting in the way of the content. The composition includes a 12 column grid system, which allows photographs and copy room to breathe.

Typography
A complete set of new typefaces were commissioned to complete the redesign. Henrik Kubel of A2/SW/HK created type designs to help simplify and restructure the layout.
"It's the first time we'd actually talked about getting a whole family of fonts custom-made and taking everything back to a family of fonts became essential. The majority of the identity for this comes from the typeface. We started from a very basic framework and built in the details and flourishes of interest" - Dan Barber.
"The fonts have been designed to deliver everything from delicate headlines, to hardworking text settings, down to very small point sizes fro factual information and listing/ The final font set comprises 14 fonts in total. divided into four sub sets(images above) and a special Numbers - only font. Each of the fonts share the same underlying structure and basic framework which means that, although they differ in look, style and weight, they do feel the same - a real family." - Dan Barber
Here in the bottom image, demonstrates how this font harmonies well to the article, there is a seer slick of sophistication yet classy appearance for the particular audience this article aims get. It also balances well as it is organised, spaced out and layout is very effective.
Tone of Voice
When comparing these two different articles 'The Independent' and 'The Sun', the front stories are the same but are presented in a different way as well as the wording. We identified that 'The Independent' newspaper demonstrates more of a serious approached to the story, whilst 'The Sun' newspaper mocks or tries to be more lighthearted to the situation of the story that has occurred. "BRIT No2 BEHEADED".
Study Task 03: Grids
By using the overview from the powerpoint about the grids, we went in pairs to find or locate the grids used for the given newspapers layout. In the end of the lesson we should have newspaper pages that we have been marked - up by us, which identifies where the grid is. (Here are some images at the bottom)
At the top image, we got a page from 'The Independent' Newspaper and drew on tracing paper columns to represent the grid layout. We did this by putting them into 8 columns, however, as we had 'The Independent' Newspaper it should be about 12 columns. But either way it still worked as we put it against other pages from the same newspaper and it line up quite well. At the bottom it shows our first 8 columns we drew first.
Then the bottom picture, presents the previous columns with some added rows within, as this demonstrates how the images on the article fit orderly. This also includes the headings, sub-headings and the story's articles.
The factors that may affect the design of the news paper, could be the size of the chosen image without scaling it properly against the grid template. Thus this could make the text look unorganised, chaotic and messy. The size of the headings or sub-headings could take so much space and how it works with the chosen colours, does it emotionally represent the feeling the reader should have when reading the particular story in the article? Finally by using the grid template we can find other spaces that we could fit other smaller images or texts within, we may of missed or not have seen due to it being so hidden.
