In this session, by building on the introduction to canons of page construction lecture, in groups we made a spider diagram based of a summary on the rules and laws of Graphic design.
- What do they achieve?
- How helpful are they?
- Can they be constraining?
- How do you think we should work within them?
Here is the image below which presents our ideas of the rules and laws of Graphic Design:
Colour:
- Appropriate use of colour theory.
- Contrast of extension.
- Contrast of hue.
- "Temperature, Saturation."
- Complimentary contrast.
- Simultaneous.
Grid:
- How a page is structured.
- Bringing balance.
- Repetition and Consistency gives guidance.
- Alignment bring order to page and aids how readable information is.
- Typeface - scale, legibility, conveys personality/mood/characteristic and communication.
- General geometry - simple = easier to understand.
- Visual understanding.
Format:
- Reflect experience on i.e. type of different paper.
- Perception of information - print publication.
- How we process information - screen fitting and adapting.
Awareness of Figure and Ground:
- White Space - Important when bring eye to an image.
- Balance of figure and ground can make image be seen more clearly.
- Tension/Relaxation.
But Everything has a purpose!!
