OUGD603 | Extended Practice | Brief 07 | Research | Student Starpack Awards 2018 - The Future Milk Bottle

Research/images of current/pervious Milk Bottles
Before commencing this brief it is essential to begin looking at current and past designs of milk bottles. This will help guide which bottle shapes are suitable and practical to contain milk without spillages, freshness and hygienic matter. Particular milk bottles that were researched for the brief were the following: Supermarkets, sustainable, Japanese and water bottles. These specific types of bottle designs were selected due to the brief's outlines is to make a functional bottle which is child safe and elderly functional it must be shown as a 2-pint bottle.

The images of the tins are below:

By referring to these types of milk packaging all of them are similar while some are different due to the shape, size, material and pouring mechanism.

Whilst the design atheistic are very simple yet contemporary expect to the Japanese style milk packaging. The difference between the milk bottles are depending on where they come from. For example, the UK's milk bottles are made from very light weight plastic and the shape is tall, wide. has a handle and a screw on lid. The sustainable one is made of out reusable materials e.g. egg cartons. There is no handle for this bottle, but it is wide and tall for holding the content. The pouring and lid is made as a pop in and out lid. The old traditional milk bottle are made our of glass, it is long and circular shape with a lid, however no handles. The Japanese bottle packaging one is made out of glass like the traditional milk bottle instead the lid is sealed by paper/string. The Yakult bottle is similar to a shape of a water bottle instead the lid is sealed by foil. Finally the water bottle is a similar shape of a Yakult bottle instead it bigger and has more texture for grip.

The most frequent pattern of these example of the milk bottle is that there is not a suitable handle for a secure grip for the consumer to hold when pouring out the content (apart of the supermarket milk bottle). The brief specifically outlines that it must be child safe and easy for the elderly to use if disabilities such as arteritis. Therefore the bottle must be functional yet suitable not only for the content but for the consumer.

The design aspects are to be considered while designing, despite these types of milk bottle design do not have a variety of a secondary/multi-usage when the content is finished. This is another element of the bottle that needs to be consider when the consumer purchasing the product. The main audience of this kind of product are families, tea lovers and milk lovers it is significant to cater for their preference this maybe of functionality, materials, distribution, multi-usages and design.

The colours of the milk bottle is usually white, therefore its typical to keep the original colour the same as it distinctive. The British colour of milk are generally - Green for semi-skimmed, Blue for full fat and Red for skimmed milk. Due to the competition brief being placed in the UK it is best to keep it in this format. However, design can also be a big factor on how it attracts the consumers attention, patterns, shapes, illustrations which is lacking in supermarkets for milk necessities. Thus this is another consideration to think about in the designing process of the milk bottle design.

'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' - by Armand Mevis (Notes/Analysis)

During this session, we look into and analysis an essay called 'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' by Armand Mevis.  The whole class did a group discussion, we shared some significant quotes within the essay that relates to our brief Type in Context: ' All these books have to be designed. Someone needs to decide which paper, typography, cover, to use'.  'It may be a jungle; you may find it hard to get the nice job, and you might get lost, but that is part of the adventure'.  Mistakes are inherent to the job of making books through trial and error'.  Over the years we have learned to limit the number of mistake; we are now much more in control'.  'Ideally, all books start with a question. The clearer the question, the more precise the answer'.  'As designers we are as responsible for content as anyone else'. 'Some books arrived in plastic bags like garbage, stac...

Studio Brief 01 - Logotype, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

In todays session, Simon Harrison gave the class a brief about redesigning a logo for brand that we have chosen. But this time we were told to do this individually. The logo we were allowed to choose could be any type of brand to redesign. However, it either had to be an international or nation brand. So for the start of this brief I went into the shopping district Trinity in Leeds, to find a logo of brand and re-create it to make it more updated or fresh. There are some images of the shops within Trinity that I considered to redesign: Once I have chosen a shop logo which I want to redesign, need to focus on by using only type. I have to experiment with stroke, scale, spacing, contrast and alignment to interpret my chosen company. I need to consider the following: Who is the company? What do they do? Who is the target audience? Where will the logo appear? Chosen Shop logo to redesign - Krispy Kreme, Doughnuts   The shop that I wanted to r...

Ideas for Type in Context Publication

IDEAS In this blog post, I have found some examples on how I would like to layout my Type in Context Publication. As my target audience is aimed at people who like hikers and historians. This type of publication will inform the readers how our way finding signages have stayed the same rural design. For the amount of text I want within my publication, the direction of where this publication is going will only be a minimum amount of text. This maybe only just an introduction page and possibly a content page.  The publication will either be a rural guide book or a coffee book for cafe where tourist/hikers/cyclist and so on, stop to have a break for some refreshments. The target audience of this specific type of publication will be at a demographic (geographical).  To create this type of publication, I will use Indesign to help me arrange and layout my pictures. This will then be easier for me to print it out professionally.  The siz...
