OUGD603 | Extended Practice | Brief 06 | Final Design & Evaluation | YCN Student Awards 2017/18 - KFC Bucket Design

Final Designs
Below are the final designs for the KFC Bucket design. These are the choices which I believe that are appropriate to the KFC outcomes. The reason of uploading two designs was because it is optional to upload more than one design to the competition brief and there was a draw between the final two designs. The template from the YCN KFC brief was used to help structure my vector and illustration designs. The metallic bucket the stickman could be foiled to make it an limited addition.

Evaluation
In conclusion the design process of the YCN's KFC brief challenging yet enjoyable. In the beginning of the brief, finding a concept/theme was the most difficult part of the bucket design. Especially looking at other entry designs via Behance. A lot of concepts were already made and taken, thus persuading my design to be completely different from the majority. By regarding to the entries design on behance was inspiring as it help break down why certain designs were design to help provide the family & friends to celebrate and eat together like their goals.

By using these entries I was able to identify and acknowledged what recurring shapes, colours, and illustrative styles were the most appealing to the audience. Majority of the designs were very illustrative and cartoony. Therefore it is vital that the designs for my Bucket must consist of the same elements. The influence of my designs were from the Olympic coke cola bottles/cans.

The illustrations of the stickmen were coloured in a rainbow colour to represent all people in society. I tried to make another special addition bucket which consist colours of red, white, black, gold and silver. The colour scheme was inspired by football world cup colours or uniform. As there is a lot of people who come together and celebrate football or sports as a whole.

Overall, I found this brief fun yet challenging. The reason of the challenging stages was that the brief was able to test my illustration and drawing skills. Thus digitalising them on Abode Illustrator and Photoshop. In addition I would do this kind of packaging competition brief again in the future if the opportunity comes.

Objectivity - Subjectivity

Evaluation: Overall, my final evaluation including looking at my peers/year tutors feedback of my logotype. Has shown that I needed to do more research into my colours, as I tried to stick with the original colours of the current logo of Krispy Kreme. As my last critique group told me to stick with them without changing it. Some liked and disliked the outline of the typography as some say it looked like icing, whilst others said it would be better if it were fuller so it makes more of an impact. Most of the comment was about the bad colour choices of the Green as it has connotations of an industrial, chemical and unhealthy look. But some said it could have connotations of high sugar as for a donut. Everyone recognised the doughnut shape for the logo, some saw the neon letter as an American diner look as my critique group told me to stay with the retro look. One of my others peers comment, that the use of the contrast between the Sans Serifs and Serif typography is appropriate to d...

'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' - by Armand Mevis (Notes/Analysis)

During this session, we look into and analysis an essay called 'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' by Armand Mevis.  The whole class did a group discussion, we shared some significant quotes within the essay that relates to our brief Type in Context: ' All these books have to be designed. Someone needs to decide which paper, typography, cover, to use'.  'It may be a jungle; you may find it hard to get the nice job, and you might get lost, but that is part of the adventure'.  Mistakes are inherent to the job of making books through trial and error'.  Over the years we have learned to limit the number of mistake; we are now much more in control'.  'Ideally, all books start with a question. The clearer the question, the more precise the answer'.  'As designers we are as responsible for content as anyone else'. 'Some books arrived in plastic bags like garbage, stac...

Studio Brief 01 - Secret 7: Final Design

In this design board, I have chosen this Record Sleeve design cover to be my final  submission for the live brief - Secret 7. I particular favoured this design as it really  portrayed the artists song and style well as the variety of the different shades of blue tones gave a good theme for the overall concept of the chosen lyric that I selected. “You were the perfect star. Again describing the meaning of the design will be yet again explained here. The symbolism  of the star is similar to a heart of the person who is going through a heart break thus this  is similar feeling when the break bit is being cracked like glass. The glass look makes it  highlight that the person’s heart is very sensitive and weak and the colours of the different  shades/tones of blue express their unhappiness and also how innocent and pure they are. The way the star outline repeats depicts how the person is slowing forgetting the perfect star  which has broken the heart...
