Inspiration & Research
When commencing this brief it is essential to begin looking at previous past Papergang box designs. This will help narrow down why these particular box designs were previous winners and put out as examples for the competition. The recurring theme of bright colours, illustrations, shapes have mostly been repeated within these images. Therefore it is important to find a similar concept which attracts stationary consumers.

As the main audience of the Papergang box are stationary consumers it is significant to into popular specialised stationary brands. For example: Paperchase and Muji.

Both brands are mostly renowned for their amount of stationary products. The style and variety designs are similar comparison to this competition briefs outcome. Paperchase's 'Collection' section or 'The Boutique Edit' are themes are 'exclusively hand picked by our buyers just for you.'

Paperchase's collections range from the following themes: Kawaii kool, Tiki Lounge, Contour, Botanical, Safari Summer, Refresh & Reboot, Fierce Female, Glitter & Sparkle, Peter Rabbit and Unicorns. The following consists of very alike designs to the competition brief. The bright colours and illustrative drawings designs are ultimately the selling point of these products. Very much like Paperchase ethos "the UK’s number 1 shopping spot for exciting and innovative design-led stationery. For over 40 years we’ve inspired with stylish stationery, unique greeting cards, distinctive gifts as well as quality art and craft materials." What they do.... "Always ready with fresh and inventive ideas, Paperchase is constantly bringing you new products with many new products launching in our stores and website every single week."

Whereas the Brand, Muji has a more of a minimalistic yet stylish sophisticated stationary approach. MUJI's Philosophy of 'No Brand Quality Goods' - The concept was born of the intersection of two distinct stances: no brand (Mujirushi) and the value of good items (ryohin). MUJI’s concept of emphasizing the intrinsic appeal of an object through rationalization and meticulous elimination of excess is closely connected to the traditionally Japanese aesthetic of “su” –– meaning plain or unadorned –– the idea that simplicity is not merely modest or frugal, but could possibly be more appealing than luxury.

Even though this brand is more simplify and contemporary it is still a popular trend. Muji is also well known for the colour pens which stand out more than it's stationary selection. Their selection of origami paper has very beautiful and authentic papers which could be used as theme for the competition brief.

Publication Layout - Leah For the inside of the 'Our Generation' publication, the collaborator Leah was in charge of this  brief's outcome segment. The publication's layout was constructed with 'Adobe Indesign' Leah made guide lines and measurements to help assist where the Photographs and the text should be placed. Illustrations of a paint brush stroke was experimented to give the pages more characteristics. We mutually agreed to make the size of the publication A5 format, and the number of pages are 16. Previously it was going to be 17, however one participant was unable to provided us with their childhood photo for us. Due to this situation Leah had to be more selective with the photos and information (Quotes) that we believe was significant for outlining our briefs context.  Below are some images of this layout format: Participant page order by names: Katie Sung  Leah Chen  Jackie Wan Tracey Lau Eliza Mo Kylie Lee Lewis Capper...

Jan Tschichold - Grids

Feedback from Tutor of Publication After  receiving  feedback from my tutor, he informed me to use grids within arranging my layout of my publication pages. This will keep my images and text in a consistent manner, thus making it visually professional. To achieve this precise layout, I will research on Jan Tschichold Grid System. This will allow me, to understand this type of matter of using a grid.  Jan Tschichold Jan Tschichold was a typographer, book designer, teacher and writer  (2 April 1902  Leipzig ,  Germany  – 11 August 1974  Locarno ,  Switzerland ) . Tschichold's Grid System Fibonacci & Golden Ratio Fibonacci sequence ratio 8:13 links to the Golden section. This sequence is not only evident within design but also nature. 1.62 -  Forms the basis of paper sizes and its principles can be used as a means of achieving balanced designs .
