Study Task 01: DAY 2 - Collaborative Branding: Burflex

During our second group meeting on our company that we got given to rebrand 'Burflex (Scaffolding Ltd) Company', we shared more of our ideas through sketches, work on photoshop and illustrator. Here are some of my sketches and my members digital and sketches of the logo:

These are my ideas, done in sketch form, photoshop and illustrator format. It was my idea of layering the letter 'B' and 'X' as it represents the scaffolding image, inspired by the scaffolding images that we liked.

My group members ideas:

INFLUENCES & INSPIRATIONS
We also researched more on scaffolding, like images on google and Pinterest. These gave us inspirations and influences on how we could combine the typography with the company's professions.

DESIGN IDEAS

My group initially started to design some ideas which were both done digitally and hand drawn based on the aspects of the structure of scaffolding. In my own personal opinion, we had a lot of difficulty as we all produced mixed ideas for the logo and what made it difficult was that everyones ideas were excellent at portraying the company and what they do. However as a typeface alone, in my opinion was stressful as we tried going for a clean-cut and simple appearance, but some of our designs looked either too busy or too thin or small for it to stand out.

DEVELOPMENT
At our development stage, being part of the group, we all found it difficult to select a design we all liked as everyone produced amazing designs. Thankfully, one of my team member saw that everyone was designing individual logos in different ways, and the thought of taking all of everyones ideas and producing a design for the logo that demonstrated the company with everyones beginning ideas.

COLOURS

Before producing the logo, we wanted to change the original colours of the original logo. This was one of the major considerations of selecting a colour palette which depicted the industrial aspects as well as the company's personality. One of my other members of the group researched into colour psychology, and we ended up choosing the colours light grey and light yellow. As these colours

represented the safety image that they company wishes to deliver for its audience and costumers.

The colour Grey was the closest to the colour black, as the meaning of the colour black can be seen as more dramatic and mysterious. Compared to to the silver/white colour it has connotations of being more illuminating and lively, thus representing how the company has a friendly, happy, helpful and transforming approach.

The colour Light/pastel yellow means helping to clear the mind, making it open and alert. Even though the colours have a big difference against one another, and have different effects. They actually harmonise well with each other and emphasise the company's elements.

ESTABLISHING THE DESIGN

Here is the logo that my team member created and combined everyones initial ideas together, which is not too chaotic but still keeping the clean-cut appearance that we all agreed to and the company's profession. We have incorporated our chosen colour scheme which has transformed our typeface logo to the message of the company we wanted to deliver. In final reflection of the logo, we agreed that the layering on the letter 'B' did not balance well with the inverted form on the letter 'X'. It was a simple solution that we could fix, by removing the yellow lines in between each form and taking it away on of the grey layers, leaving it only with two of them instead. Below is an image of our final logo from the group task in which we rebranded the company's logo 'Burflex (Scaffolding Ltd)'.

FINAL LOGO WITH MOCK UPS

The identity of the company brand was by designing the typeface around a concept to express the mission statement of the company, which says "We believe all our customers need are important", thus they are continuously moving forward as a company.

'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' - by Armand Mevis (Notes/Analysis)

During this session, we look into and analysis an essay called 'Every Book Starts with an Idea: Notes for Designers' by Armand Mevis.  The whole class did a group discussion, we shared some significant quotes within the essay that relates to our brief Type in Context: ' All these books have to be designed. Someone needs to decide which paper, typography, cover, to use'.  'It may be a jungle; you may find it hard to get the nice job, and you might get lost, but that is part of the adventure'.  Mistakes are inherent to the job of making books through trial and error'.  Over the years we have learned to limit the number of mistake; we are now much more in control'.  'Ideally, all books start with a question. The clearer the question, the more precise the answer'.  'As designers we are as responsible for content as anyone else'. 'Some books arrived in plastic bags like garbage, stac...

Studio Brief 01 - Logotype, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

In todays session, Simon Harrison gave the class a brief about redesigning a logo for brand that we have chosen. But this time we were told to do this individually. The logo we were allowed to choose could be any type of brand to redesign. However, it either had to be an international or nation brand. So for the start of this brief I went into the shopping district Trinity in Leeds, to find a logo of brand and re-create it to make it more updated or fresh. There are some images of the shops within Trinity that I considered to redesign: Once I have chosen a shop logo which I want to redesign, need to focus on by using only type. I have to experiment with stroke, scale, spacing, contrast and alignment to interpret my chosen company. I need to consider the following: Who is the company? What do they do? Who is the target audience? Where will the logo appear? Chosen Shop logo to redesign - Krispy Kreme, Doughnuts   The shop that I wanted to r...

Ideas for Type in Context Publication

IDEAS In this blog post, I have found some examples on how I would like to layout my Type in Context Publication. As my target audience is aimed at people who like hikers and historians. This type of publication will inform the readers how our way finding signages have stayed the same rural design. For the amount of text I want within my publication, the direction of where this publication is going will only be a minimum amount of text. This maybe only just an introduction page and possibly a content page.  The publication will either be a rural guide book or a coffee book for cafe where tourist/hikers/cyclist and so on, stop to have a break for some refreshments. The target audience of this specific type of publication will be at a demographic (geographical).  To create this type of publication, I will use Indesign to help me arrange and layout my pictures. This will then be easier for me to print it out professionally.  The siz...
