Study Task 02 - How Do You Read? - Colour Relativity

"There are no ugly colours; there are only ugly colours in combination." - Paula Scher

Following from the group discussion, we had to revealed our least favourite colour, this requires to build on the session's overview of colour relativity and consider where that identified 'bad' colour could work in a combination with another colour.

To presented our comprehension of this, we will have to use the Pantone reference as a guide and chose another colour that, alongside black and a hue or tone of our 'least favourite' colour. This must work effectively within the scheme for a simple children's book.
My least favourite colour is Pink, so I had to think of another colour that would work well with 'Pink' and 'Black'. So here are some of my experimental colour swatches, that I could use for my final design for my simple children's book cover. The image is below:

  • Pink - Pantone 2037 U (same).
  • Black - Pantone 165-1-7 C (same).

1) Grey - Pantone 2330 U.
2) Grey - Pantone 2332 U.
3) Grey - Pantone 2334 U.

1) Orange - Pantone 22-1-7 C.
2) Orange - Pantone 4-1-7 C.
3) Orange - Pantone 7-1-7 C.

1) Yellow - Pantone 1-1-7 C.
2) Yellow - Pantone 2001 U.
3) Yellow - Pantone 2003 U .

1) Purple - Pantone 42-1-7 C.
2) Purple - Pantone 47-1-7 C.
3) Purple - Pantone 49-1-7 C.

Publication Layout - Leah For the inside of the 'Our Generation' publication, the collaborator Leah was in charge of this  brief's outcome segment. The publication's layout was constructed with 'Adobe Indesign' Leah made guide lines and measurements to help assist where the Photographs and the text should be placed. Illustrations of a paint brush stroke was experimented to give the pages more characteristics. We mutually agreed to make the size of the publication A5 format, and the number of pages are 16. Previously it was going to be 17, however one participant was unable to provided us with their childhood photo for us. Due to this situation Leah had to be more selective with the photos and information (Quotes) that we believe was significant for outlining our briefs context.  Below are some images of this layout format: Participant page order by names: Katie Sung  Leah Chen  Jackie Wan Tracey Lau Eliza Mo Kylie Lee Lewis Capper...

Katie always  communicated very well. We were both impressed with how she incorporated the feedback we gave into her designs, s he always consciously and aware of what we wanted overall, sent many new variations of the logo designs, always referred back to feedback and messaged us for specific information (e.g. Business card enquires) and she was able to explained her designs to us and how it would be much better (i.e. change of the colour scheme).  To conclude the final results were great.  I would highly recommend Kati...

Jan Tschichold - Grids

Feedback from Tutor of Publication After  receiving  feedback from my tutor, he informed me to use grids within arranging my layout of my publication pages. This will keep my images and text in a consistent manner, thus making it visually professional. To achieve this precise layout, I will research on Jan Tschichold Grid System. This will allow me, to understand this type of matter of using a grid.  Jan Tschichold Jan Tschichold was a typographer, book designer, teacher and writer  (2 April 1902  Leipzig ,  Germany  – 11 August 1974  Locarno ,  Switzerland ) . Tschichold's Grid System Fibonacci & Golden Ratio Fibonacci sequence ratio 8:13 links to the Golden section. This sequence is not only evident within design but also nature. 1.62 -  Forms the basis of paper sizes and its principles can be used as a means of achieving balanced designs .
