OUGD603 | Extended Practice | Brief 08 | Final Design & Evaluation | Student Starpack Awards 2018 - Luxury Family Range of Cans for Tea or Coffees
Final Designs
Below are the final designs of the selection of the luxury tea or coffee tin designs. Poster designs have been created and produced for the tea tins in a cafe area, in the plastic bag packaging with gold ribbon to seal it, exposing the gold foil to make the tin packaging have a luxury appeal to it, separately and being able to stack and tea leafs inside the tin product.
By using the research from the tin designs. The origami hinged gift box paper model became an inspiration of the shape and size of the tin. The origami box inspiration is shaped as a box that contains two side lids to close and open the box. This shape allows none wasted space, distribution of the bottle to fit nicely, closely and even stack well when transporting and a suitable size for consumers to carry away in shopping bag and baggage from duty free in airports.
The original design was supposed to be the similar to the origami hinged gift box. However, due to the 3D printers limitations with printing in plastic the paper model design the overall needed to be altered into a more realistic and function shape. For example it's complication of creating a smooth enough mechanism for the two lids to open side ways.
Therefore the lids of the tin design allows the consumer's to interact with the packaging. With this tin mechanism allows this function to enable to have that special quality or luxury appearance. The lid design for the tea tin was also altered due to the reality of making the 3D version in a functional manner. The lid has a side rotation function similar to the origami paper model. By using studs to allow this same function of the lid opening mechanism to work more efficiently.
The overall design for the tin was inspired and used for the initial submission design board designs which included a lid cover. The colour scheme of tin was influenced by the popular Chinese teas (Black, white and green). In addition to the sticker designs to seal the box were influenced by authentic Chinese patterns. The main colour scheme of the luxury tea tins are gold, silver and black. This keeps a consistent concept of keeping the packaging a high end or sophisticated approach. The inside of the tin is covered in gold foil this allows the inside to have more of a royal and high class product.
The logo for the tin design was the typeface known as Kozuka Gothic Pr6N this was to create a constant pattern design for the Chinese pattern of the tea favour and the english translation. The overall designs were printed on a matte material this allows the colours to contrast against the grey plastic material. In addition it is easier to stick the design on the 3D model. The poster designs also help advertise the product especially when including text of the name of the product in a combination of sans serif and serif fonts.
To concluded, this brief fun yet challenging. The reason of the challenging stages that was 3D printing this is due to the amount of time of the model to make and the trial and errors of the plastic forming into the lids and creating a smooth mechanism. As for the 3D printer - it prints in layers therefore the plastic became irregular and uneven. But the overall design was successful and the tea tin design were functional and even practical for the main consumers that the brief outlined.

Evaluation
In conclusion the design process of the luxury tea tin design brief was challenging yet enjoyable. In the beginning of the brief, finding a functional and appropriate shape for the tin was the most challenging aspect of the brief. Especially when finding a suitable shape for that the consumers can use for a secondary usage was complicated to conduct for design and product. During researching for different shapes, sizes of current and previous tin designs were already made and taken, thus persuading my design to be completely different from the majority. By regarding to the previous tin designs on the google images, behance and pinterest it was inspiring as it help break down why certain designs were used. By using the research from the tin designs.
